The West and Islam have had an uneasy relationship for a very long time, which dates from even before the Muslims appeared on the world stage as the conquerors and led to the horrifying Crusades. Both developed a rhetoric against each other in order to define oneself by reviling the other.
Most Muslims regard Sharia as a perfect and divinely ordained religious-ethical-legal system. In their view Sharia relates a Muslim individual and society to God’s will and purpose by pronouncing wide-ranging edicts in both private and public spheres of human life in the matters that are between a person and God as well as those that are between a person and fellow humans.
PREAMBLE: When Antoine van Agtmael coined the term “emerging markets” in 1981 as an upbeat alternative to “the third world” or “the developing world”, he could not have imagined how prescient he would prove to be.
Muslim ideologues, especially during the past few decades, have espoused a passion to make two assertions. One, religiously they are the superior people on the earth. Two, they are chosen by Allah to wage war to eradicate evil from the world and to invite non-Muslims to embrace Islam.
“Experience has taught me to put a premium on those people who can appreciate you for what you are.”
While, currently back home in Canada for vacations, talking to a friend today I realized that I am about a couple of years away from my fiftieth birthday. The realization comes without warning and I am suddenly confronted with the feeling of time inexorably passing me by.
In talking to my friends of various backgrounds I often get the impression that Islam is a widely misunderstood religion even when looked at in dissociation with present day’s political context. In fact, the fundamentalism manifested by many of the Muslim groups has meant that Islam is quite often poorly received.
